Sergio-David

These are the words of Sergio Assad about his composition:

"More than a decade ago I was asked to write a piece to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the great Austrian/Canadian guitar teacher Eli Kassner. I based the piece on the letters of his name corresponding each syllable of it to the English, Dutch system of letters ABCDEFG and called it Eli's Portrait. There was a concert organized for the celebration of Eli's birthday and David Russell generously agreed to play the piece. It turns out that David kept the piece in his repertoire for that entire season and the piece got to be known in the guitar circle.
A few years later I was asked again to write a piece in homage to Sandy Bolton, a guitar aficionado who happened to live in Tucson and was a great supporter of the Tucson Guitar Department. The piece was written following the same system of corresponding letters, this time based on Sandy's name and once again, the guitarist in charge of doing the piece's premiere was David Russell. The piece was obviously named Sandy's Portrait.
More recently David Russell was honoured with an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Arizona in Tucson and the guitar professor of this institution, Thomas Patterson asked me if I could write a piece for David. The request was made just a couple of weeks prior to the ceremony organized in honor of David. There was no much time to write a piece properly but it was an obvious opportunity to create homage to David using the same corresponding letter system that I used to create the previous Portraits … I prepared a sketch for David's Portrait to be continued later and this sketch was played by the Chilean guitarist Renato Serrano during the Honorary Doctorate ceremony.

There was a difference this time in the writing process and I included in the score other names from David's immediate family. There were his mom Anne, his dad Rusty and of course his wife and great life companion Maria Jesus.
It took me some time to conclude the piece but was a great pleasure to think and try to musically materialize the elements that surround David's life. The names of Anne and Rusty create the bass line that support David's name. There are a couple of dances included strategically in the score. The first one is an Irish Jig depicting David's Celtic root and the second one is a Muñeira, typical dance from Galicia where David and María Jesús chose to live. These two dances are set apart by a love song based upon María Jesús' name."
